July 28, 2014

This month has been quite different than the last. I find myself as an artist in residence in Green River, Utah, population 954 (including me!). It’s been difficult to position myself in a role that feels comfortable both for the Epicenter and myself. I teamed up with Evan Rimoldi on a guerrilla installation that operates as a kind of kinetic sculpture. Situated within an abandoned military base in the desert, it has a meditative quality as well as an air of reclamation.

I also took the opportunity to contemplate my feelings on nationalism while I resided in the conservative southwest. It seems to me that there are two Americas–the symbolic which is abstract and includes the flag, the political sphere, etc. and the land, which is not abstract but literal and in this part of the country quite fixed.
